Health experts in Delhi discussed the latest technical advances in the treatment of brain and spinal tumors. They deliberated on methods to make the management of these tumors technically feasible, surgically safer, more effective and acceptable to patients.
Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute & Research Center (RGCIRC) organized Neuro & Spine Onco update at RGCIRC Rohini Delhi. Experts from two of India’s largest and most dedicated Neuro-Oncol facilities, Tata Memorial and RGCIRC, participated and shared their knowledge and experiences. During the discussions, many other experts from AIIMS, GB Pant Hospital, RML Hospital and Safdarjung Hospital also participated and gave speeches. The talks were also attended by private hospitals like BLK, Max, Apollo, Fortis, Medanta, Paras and Artemis.

As a unique feature, the Neuro & Spine Onco 2022 update hosted a live awake craniotomy workshop using Neuronavigation and Intraoperative Ultrasound techniques so that young neurosurgeons can get first-hand insight into the latest technologies to obtain an optimal Onco-functional result in tumor surgery.
During the surgery, the two-way interaction between the surgeons and the delegates not only helped to understand the nuances of the surgery, but also to learn the technical know-how.
The surgery which was directly shown to the public in the auditorium was conducted by Dr Ali Asgar, Head of Neurosurgery at Tata Memorial, with Dr Premsagar explaining the surgical measures taken in real time. It was awake surgery in which the patient undergoing surgery remained active – talking, singing and moving limbs as the brain tumor was gradually removed.
Talking about new techniques to treat brain tumours, Dr. Premsagar said the new neuro-navigation technique helps the surgeon to accurately identify the tumor in the brain or spinal cord as precision is a must in brain surgery or the spine. “Similarly, intraoperative full-spectrum ultrasound of the brain and spine helps us remove the tumor as much as possible with functional preservation,” Dr. Premsagar said.
When the tumor is surgically removed, a small part of it may still be left in the form of its roots. Radiation oncologists explained how that part of a tumor that remains to be removed can be burnt off by radiation through the various types of conventional radiation available in India including IGRT and IMRT. CyberKnife is another form of radiation therapy that has been discussed.
Pathologists from different parts of the country provided an update on the latest WHO classification of CNS tumors that takes into account molecular diagnostics. “Previously, we only had histopathology, but now molecular tests tell us more about the tumor, its prognosis and its subsequent treatment,” Dr Premsagar added.
