The Duncan High School (DHS) music department remained active with a variety of performances, from competitions to concerts, throughout the fall semester.
Five DHS singers were selected for the 2021 Southwest Oklahoma Whole Region Honorary Choir to include seventh, eighth and ninth graders who participated in the junior choir and 10th graders, Grades 11 and 12 were in the senior choir.
The group of about 200 students from each choir was chosen from schools in southwestern Oklahoma. They met in Lawton on Monday October 12 at First Baptist Church for a full day of rehearsals.
The choirs performed that evening with Junior High Principal Doris Lambert, Adjunct Professor of Music at Cameron University in Lawton and High School, Dr. Karl Nelson, Professor of Music at University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond.
DHS students selected for the choir included Asia Fleetwood, Adalina Pizana, Emersen Villagrana, Reagan Hicks and Nevaeh Kamrath.
In addition, three students from the vocal music department were auditioned for the Oklahoma All State Honor Choirs and Asia Fleetwood and Adelina Pizana were shortlisted for the OkMEA Treble Honor Choir.
These choirs will be hosted at the Oklahoma Music Educators Association state convention held in Tulsa, January 19-22, 2022.
Freshman Reagan Hicks was selected for the OCDA Junior High All-State Choir. This group will perform at Oklahoma Choral Director’s Association all-state concerts in Oklahoma City from January 6 to 8, 2022.
The All State Honor Choirs are the highest individual awards that a vocal music student can receive.
The DHS Vocal Music Department also participated in the ECU (East Central University) Choral Festival on October 28.
DHS took a mixed university choir, a treble choir, and a bass-tenor choir, as well as a mixed choir from their open choir. All the choirs were awarded I Superior grades directly. The reflections also took 10 sets and each of those groups also got direct I’s. Thanks to this effort, DHS Vocal Music obtained the first place of this competition.
For the highlight of the fall semester, the DHS Vocal Music Department will present its annual Christmas concert at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 9 at the DHS Auditorium.
La Revue Dessert will also be held in the school cafeteria and common area. There will be desserts served and performers throughout the event, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Tickets for the concert only are $ 2 each and will be sold at the auditorium door.
The theme of this year’s show is “Merry Christmas,” featuring a variety of Christmas carols from traditional to contemporary.
With funny songs like “The Holiday Tango! “,” A Celebrity Christmas “and many others, as well as songs like” Christmas Time Is Here “,” Love Can “,” O, What a Holy Night “and” One Star, Une Nuit Sainte “.
Most of the songs performed were by famous recording artists like Britney Spears and John Legend.
“Peace, Peace” will once again be the traditional song that closes the Christmas concert to remind us of the reason for the season.
The vocal music department is under the direction of Kevin Zinn.
