SIOUX CITY – The sounds of gospel music will be in the air when the sixth annual Voices Unite vocal music workshop starts at 9 a.m. Saturday at Bishop Heelan Catholic High School Fine Arts Center, 1231 Grandview Blvd.
A free singing workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with afternoon tea and lunch provided.
The workshop, open to church choirs of all faiths, will be taught by seasoned choir director Sandra Pearson and her team of Leland Mickels and Cedric Pearson.
“A lot of people know Sandra for her work as choir director for Sioux City’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day program,” said Charity Koehler, who co-founded Voices Unite with Chemine Mulford. “Sandra is fabulous and we are honored to have her.”
Koehler has been a church musician for over 20 years and Mulford currently conducts song and bell choirs at St. John’s Lutheran Church. But Mulford said any singer interested in church music will learn from the Voices Unite workshops.
Pearson said she was just happy to be able to sing again.
“During the COVID-19 pandemic, many choirs were unable to minister through music,” she said. “We keep our fingers crossed that those days are soon behind us.”
The day will end with a free concert open to the public at 4 p.m.
“It will be a wonderful gospel concert,” said Pearson. “While it’s nice for the choir to come together as a group, we need someone to sing along.”
“This is a community wide concert for all faiths,” she said. “We all need a little more of the gospel in our hearts.”
