Awards ceremonies can seem filled with glitz and glamour, but behind the scenes it can be a different story. For some celebrities, these events aren’t so much an occasion to celebrate as times when they’re unfairly pitted against their co-workers. And for others, it’s a night where they aren’t represented or recognized despite their accomplishments.
For these reasons, some celebrities choose to simply walk away while others go so far as to organize a boycott in hopes of enacting change. And even though the awards shows continue to air, it’s safe to say that the opinions of these actors and musicians are changing the way audiences view the awards shows.

1. Seth Rogen
Seth Rogen doesn’t really care about award shows — nor does he understand why anyone else would. The actor says he wouldn’t expect anyone to care about an awards show he personally has nothing to do with.
“I don’t understand why movie people care so much about other people care about the awards we give each other. To me, maybe people don’t care. I don’t care who wins the awards in the movie. No other industry expects everyone to care about the awards they give themselves. Maybe people don’t care. Maybe they did for a while. and they stopped caring. 2. Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran may have won plenty of awards, but he’s not a big fan of award shows either. The musician says events like the Grammys and the American Music Awards pit artists against each other and create a hostile environment. He says he’s not the only one feeling this either.
“The room is filled with resentment and hatred towards everyone, and it’s a pretty uncomfortable atmosphere…It’s just that a lot of people want other people to fail, and I don’t like that… The vibe just isn’t nice… It’s a really, really awful vibe to be in there. I always walk away sad and I don’t like it,” Ed said on Audacy’s “The Julia Show.”

3. The weekend
While The Weeknd admits he’s “afraid to give speeches”, he’s not opposed to all award shows. He has a particular problem with the Grammys and has been boycotting the ceremony since 2021. When he received no nominations for that year’s ceremony, he decided to back out of any further involvement with the annual ceremony. He explained that he believed “secret committees” within the organization corrupt the results – and even when the Recording Academy promised to get rid of the committees, he continued to stay away from the show .
“I think the industry and the public need to see the transparent system really in play for the win to be celebrated, but this is an important start. I’m still not interested in being part of the Grammys, especially with their own admission of corruption for all these decades. I will not submit again in the future,” he said. Variety.
4. Kanye West
Kanye West has had his fair share of onstage antics at awards shows, but at the 2015 VMAs he revealed he doesn’t even care about the ceremonies at all. Amid accepting the Video Vanguard Award, he said he didn’t understand the point of judging everyone.
“I still don’t understand the award shows. I don’t understand how they get five people who work their whole lives… to sell records, sell concert tickets, stand on a carpet and, for the first times in their lives, be judged on a chopping block and have the opportunity to be called a loser. I don’t understand my brother. I don’t understand when the biggest album or the biggest video that I don’t understand”, Kanye noted.

5. Woody Allen
Woody Allen notoriously avoids award shows. In fact, he only attended the Oscars once, shortly after the September 11 attacks, to present a group of films that had been shot in New York. Woody said he just doesn’t enjoy award shows and even calls them meaningless.
“I have no respect for this kind of ceremony. I just don’t think they know what they’re doing. When you see who wins these things – or who doesn’t – you can see how This Oscar doesn’t make sense. The thing is…I know it sounds terrible, but winning that Oscar for ‘Annie Hall’ meant nothing to me,” Woody said. noted.

Like The Weeknd, Drake also takes issue with the people behind the Grammys. In 2017 he did not submit his album, “More Life”, for consideration at the event and in 2021 he requested not to be included in the nominees. Several years later, Justin also withdrew his nominations because he was disappointed that his album “Changes” was nominated as a pop album as opposed to an R&B album.
“I’m very meticulous and intentional with my music. That being said, I decided to make an R&B album. Changes was and is an R&B album. In 2016, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith were at the forefront of an Oscars boycott due to the lack of diversity in the nominations. At that time, all 20 contenders in the acting category were white — and this was the second year that it had been. In a video, Jada urged others to join them in their boycott.
“I can’t help but ask the question: is it time for people of color to recognize how much power, influence, that we have amassed, that we no longer need to ask to be invited? anywhere? Begging for recognition, or even asking, diminishes dignity and diminishes power. And we are a worthy people, and we are powerful. So let the Academy do them, with all grace and love. And do we do, differently,” she said in a Facebook video.

John Leguizamo stepped back from the Emmys in 2020 due to a lack of Latinx nominees. In fact, the Primetime Emmy Awards had no nominations for Latinx actors or shows in any major category.
