The year 2021 has started on a positive note for the television industry. We saw several program launches on General Entertainment Channels (GEC) throughout the year.
Unlike 2020, production houses have delivered new content in the year 2021 without any breaks. During the second wave, all of the production houses moved their base outside Maharashtra to a remote location to continue production of viewers’ favorite shows. The year saw over 50 shows across the Hindi GECs.
The year also welcomed new trends in Hindi GEC programming. For example, Colors launched a new format in the non-fiction segment – “The Big Picture” – a visual quiz hosted by Superstar Ranveer Singh. Likewise, Sony Entertainment Television (SET) launched “Shark Tank”, a commercial reality format.
Some channels also continued to offer regional Hindi programming last year, while others launched new seasons of their popular shows in the drama category. For example, SET launched the second season of Kuch Rang Pyaar Ke Aise Bhi and Bade Achhe Lagte Hain. Additionally, Colors brought back their popular shows Sasural Simar Ka and Balika Vadhu. Likewise, Star Bharat and Star Plus have broadcast popular shows Sasural Genda Phool, Pratiyga and Saath Nibhanaa Saathiya.
Rajesh Ram Singh, producer of Ghum Hai Kisikey Pyaar Meiin TV shows (an ongoing show based on a Bengali show on Star Jalsha), said: “2021 has been great for the industry. After the pandemic there was a Little apprehension that viewers who started watching OTT would not return to TV, but we realized that viewers were different from OTT. Some changes must have happened from TV to OTT, but not a lot. People watch good shows on TV, which can be seen on the chart. “
Singh added, “The first four to five shows are all remakes of different regional languages. Therefore, we realize that there is good leeway for regional content which should also be exploited in the future.” Singh is also producing a new show – ‘Kabhi Kabhie Ittefaq Se’ for Star Plus.
According to industry experts, the cost of production increased by 7-10% in 2021 compared to 2020. An industry observer said: “There has been an increase in production costs, and several factors have led to this spike. The cost has now come down, but it is still above 2020.”
Meanwhile, shows slated for 2020 saw the light of day in 2021. The year saw a big wave of reality TV shows on television, including Dance Deewane on Colors TV, Dance Plus on Star Plus, Super Dancer on Sony. TV, Indian Pro Music League and SaReGaMaPa on Zee TV.
The year was also marked by the emergence of a trend in which shows were launched first on OTT and then on television. Dance Plus premiered on Disney + Hotstar and Bigg Boss on Voot.
“This year has been good for us, despite the containment that took place in March, TV production has not stopped. Thakur added, “We noticed that viewers love the joyful content and more dramas that captured the hearts of people, like Anupama. More regional stories were adapted this year. It was also the year that Dance Plus was first released on a digital platform. “
