Residents invited to celebrate Earth Day by taking the Cool Capital Challenge and reducing their carbon footprint
Montgomery County residents, businesses and members of the faith community interested in becoming leaders in reducing carbon dioxide emissions are invited to celebrate Earth Day by participating in a “carbon buster” leadership workshop. The workshop will be held on Thursday, April 17 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Executive Office Building Auditorium, 101 Monroe Street, Rockville. It is presented by the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection, the Cool Capital Challenge, the Sierra Club’s Montgomery County Group, the Center for a New American Dream and the Greater Washington Interfaith Power and Light.
“I am convinced that to effectively address climate change, we need everyone to take action in their homes, congregations and workplaces,” said Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett. “I urge you to take this opportunity to help lead our community on an issue that is critical to the entire planet. Let’s redouble our efforts this Earth Day to fight global warming and preserve environmental quality for future generations.”
At the workshop, participants will learn what specific steps they can take to reduce energy use, save money and help the region address the climate crisis. They will also learn how to effectively spread the word to friends, neighbors, customers and colleagues. Using the Cool Capital Challenge’s web-based “carbon calculator,” participants will be able to track the progress their community or business is making in reducing harmful emissions.
The Cool Capital Challenge is a diverse region-wide partnership of residents, communities, schools, businesses, congregations, government agencies and other institutions committed to reducing the Washington region’s annual carbon dioxide emissions by one billion pounds by Earth Day, April 22.
The event is free and participants can register at the door. For more information about the workshop, email douglas.weisburger@montgomerycountymd.gov or call 240-777-7775.
Participants are encouraged to take Metro to the workshop. The Rockville Metrorail station is located about a block from the Executive Office Building.
